THE "OSU" CRISIS

In the book, No longer at Ease, late Prof. Chuinua Achebe wrote, "our fathers in their darkness and ignorance called an innocent man Osu, a thing given to the idols, and thereafter he became an outcast, and his children and his children's children to all his generations.
The caste systems (Osu, Ume Ohu) have become a malignant sore in the cultural tradition of Igbo tribe of Southern Eastern Nigeria. The Osucast system particularly has over time become one practice that has refuse to go away despite the impact of Christianity education, civilization and human right culture.
Not a few people have condemned the system which has traumatized many innocent people but the problem persists. This outdated discriminatory tradition, with no moral or legal basis for its continued practice  and observance in the contemporary Igbo society continues to influence major decisions, choices and inclinations in the area of mutual associations, business and most importantly in the contraction of marriages.
Many Couple have had their years of intimate courtship swept down the drain on realization that one party fall into one caste classification or the other, while several other intending brides and grooms have been jilted without notice for same reason.
Some religion leaders after preaching against the ill treatment on this people, go behind close door to tell their children never to bring "an outcast" for marriage. These has eaten deep that i begin to wonder, will these ever come to an end?
One good thing is that nature always smile at these set of people we call "outcast", they are always among the elite, top politicians and wealthy. Though they tend to hide their identity due to the trauma that will follow, but the one thing i know is that they are always 'well to do'.
